A Birthday Celebration, or a Funeral Wake?

July 4, 1776 - July 4, 2014

Many years ago my wife and I were invited to the home of friends to watch the fireworks in a town situated around a lake. We sat next to the shore and peered across the lake at the distant display. We could see the fireworks alright, but we were far enough away that the sound-delay of the "booms" was a bit disconcerting. To be honest, we felt a little detached from the celebration.

That is exactly the way I felt tonight as my wife and I went on a little walk. People in the town in which we live were blithely going about their business of preparing to celebrate the Fourth. Even though it was not dark yet, people were lighting sparklers, Roman candles, and setting off rockets. I walked around with a leaden feeling in the pit of my stomach. "Why celebrate?" I asked myself.

To be sure, I am grateful I live in this country. I can think of no other country that I would choose to live in permanently, given the choice. I acknowledge that I am blessed by God to live here. But I honestly cannot enjoy the celebration tonight. To me, it feels like watching a close friend about to overdose on meth or crack cocaine. For the last time. And there is nothing I can do to stop him, because he thinks he's having a good time.

I could reel off a dozen symptoms, but let me give you just one. We are seeing an influx of scores of thousands of children coming across our southern borders. They are overwhelming the system. And that is not an accident. It is by design. As long ago as January of this year our government was planning on their coming over. Government agencies were requisitioning vehicles that could transport them for hire. Our President, you see, has sent them an engraved invitation to come. He found a loophole in a law passed in former President Bush's administration that gave preferential treatment to refugees from noncontiguous countries. And President Obama has advertised how these children will be treated. And they take him at his word. It won't be long and all their relatives will be coming.

There are people I know who call themselves Christians who think this is wonderful. They think it is our Christian obligation to support open borders. "What would Jesus do?" Well, I don't think Jesus is in favor of national suicide is he? Because that's exactly what this is. Of course the people who advocate open borders are more than a little hypocritical in my opinion. Have they been to border towns and seen the disgruntlement and the chaos down there? No, they haven't. And they are really hypocrites, in my opinion, because they don't practice what they preach. Every one of them will lock their own doors before they go to bed tonight.

But this national suicide didn't start yesterday. It started in the 19th century when Darwinism began to titillate the fancies of American academics. By now Darwinism is the most widely-accepted religion in our country (Rom. 1:18-23). We forgot about God, and we began to put him off limits.

But God has not stood idly by. As we have rejected Him, he has plunged our faces in our own offal. He has given us over to moral impurity (Rom. 1:24). I could see that happening as I was growing up as a young person fifty years ago. But as we worshiped and served the creature instead of the Creator (Rom. 1:25), God gave us over to perverted immorality - to homosexuality and lesbianism (Rom. 1:26-27). We can see that happening before our very eyes. And because we have not seen fit to acknowledge God any longer, God is in the process of giving us over to a depraved mind (Rom. 1:28-32). We think national suicide is a great and noble thing!

So I guess I should not be surprised that we have twice elected into office a man who wants to destroy this country as it was initially founded. And many in America seem to revel in that fact.

As for me, it makes me sad. It is with a heavy heart tonight that I listen to the fading explosions of the fireworks outside. For you this July Fourth is a Birthday Celebration. To me, it is more like attending the Funeral Wake of an aged, once-glorious friend. The Funeral is not quite here yet. But it is merely a question of when, not if.
