A growing number of conservative Catholics are entertaining questions about their new pope. He has stated a reluctance to judge gay priests. He has identified himself as a "regular Catholic" who does not think the Church must always be speaking out against such issues as homosexuality and abortion. In an interview with an atheist Italian journalist, he said each person “must choose to follow the good and fight evil as he conceives them” and calling efforts to convert people to Christianity “solemn nonsense.” |
